Introduction of the Research Cluster and Greetings from the Head

About the Komatsu Collaborative Research Cluster for Innovative Technologies

Komatsu and Science Tokyo (Tokyo Institute of Technology until September 2024) signed an organizational collaboration agreement in 2015 and have been conducting multiple joint research projects, mainly in tribology technology. In order to expand the research fields conducted between these two parties and conduct basic research on unexplained phenomena in the industrial field, the Komatsu Collaborative Research Cluster for Innovative Technologies was established in 2019 as  the first Collaborative Research Cluster at Science Tokyo (Tokyo Tech when it was established). This Collaborative Research Cluster is a place for research and development that combines academic and practical studies, and also aims to create new research fields and foster excellent human resources.

Currently, Dr. Shinji Tanaka is in charge of the tribology technology, and Dr. Takashi Saito is in charge of thermal management technology. They are also working with Komatsu researchers and engineers to build a cross-disciplinary research system and develop construction machinery technologies that contribute to building a sustainable society.

Greetings from the Head

My name is Takushi Saito, and I took over as the new head of the institute in September 2024, succeeding Dr. Naoto Ohtake, the first head of this Collaborative Research Cluster. The Komatsu Collaborative Research Cluster for Innovative Technologies is located in the lush Suzukakedai Campus. In addition to faculty and students from Science Tokyo, many researchers and engineers from Komatsu are also enrolled there. As the Collaborative Research Cluster is a bridge between Komatsu and Science Tokyo, I believe that it will be a place for the university to see and hear about actual industrial issues, and for companies to absorb and acquire the university's knowledge and technology. I also believe that the research themes that emerge from this will not only help develop human resources, but also raise the level of Japan's industrial competitiveness. I intend to make the most of the benefits of having a joint research base at the university and work toward achieving the carbon neutral goal that the world is aiming for.
